When to Toss?

Hey beauties! So I get asked many times when is the proper time to toss out makeup. I know I dread tossing out makeup especially when I have invested time and money on each item. Chances are we’ve all used expired makeup at some point. Those itchy eyes and skin irritations are a huge wake up call to start decluttering and tossing them away! Unlike food and other items Makeup isn’t required to have an expiration date, so here is a small list to help you declutter, enjoy!

Mascara 3months

Mascara should be replaced every three months, because that little wand is a bacteria’s best friend. Due to the mascaras consistency, this makes it more vulnerable to bacteria. Also its proximity to your eye can lead to possible infections, and we want to avoid that as much as possible.

Liquid Liners 6months

Liquid eyeliners show the same concerns as mascara, so they should be replaced every six months.
Pencil eyeliners, however should last up to two years with the sharping of pencil, which keeps it fresh.

Foundation 6-12months

Foundations such as liquid foundations or cream foundations should last you anywhere from six to twelve months. If you notice a change in smell, texture and color say goodbye sooner. As well as if you are prone to acne, think about tossing it out closer to every six months. Try your best to keep it out the bathroom and areas where there is a lot of moisture, as it can make it “go bad” sooner.

Lip-gloss 1year

Due to its liquid consistency, lip-gloss needs to be replaced more often than lipsticks. So switch it up and swap out every year. It’s a great excuse to switch up colors and but new ones with the seasons changing!

Concealer 1year

Concealers, as with liners, depend on the consistency. Liquid concealers should be tossed out after one year, but powder concealers are good up till two years. Stick concealers are good up to 18 months. If you notice a smell and color change its time to toss!

Nail polish 2years

Now, if you notice a change in color or a foul smell it’s time to part ways and toss! Generally speaking the nail polish should last you up to two years and most come with an expiration date on the back of the bottle which makes it even easier. Yay to expiration dates!

Lipstick 2 years

Lipsticks can last up to two years! Although you should dispose of your beloved lipsticks if you sense a change in texture, dryness, or change in hues (color).  Since lipstick doesn’t contain any water it last a lot longer.
(MAC lipsticks, and a bunch of others I depoted to be more sanitary)

Powders 2 years

With proper care and clean brushes, powder based products (bronzers, eye shadows, blush, face powder, etc.) can last for a couple years. Now that truly is a match made in makeup heaven!

Here is a Glamour Tip: To keep track of your products expiration dates, write down with a sharpie on the bottom of each product so you know when it’s time to toss! If not write down your products in a note book with the date of purchase and the date of the expiration close to where you do your makeup as a friendly reminder.
